Beta (market sensitivity)

How strongly a stock's price has moved with the overall market.

Beta = how much the stock has moved for each 1% move in the market, historically

A beta of 1 means the stock has tended to move with the market; 1.5 means about 50% more in either direction; 0.5 about half as much. Utilities and consumer staples tend to sit below 1, chip makers and young growth companies above.

Beta measures past price swings, not the risk of losing money in the business. A stock can have a low beta and still fall a long way on company-specific news.
