Enterprise value (EV)
The value of the whole business: shareholders' stake plus net debt.
EV = market cap + total debt − cash and short-term investments
Enterprise value is roughly what it would cost to buy the whole company: its shares, plus its debts, minus the cash you would get with it. Two companies with the same market cap can have very different enterprise values if one carries heavy debt.
It is the numerator of EV/EBITDA and EV/sales, which compare businesses regardless of how they are financed.
